ANNUAL CONFERENCE WRAP-UP
Author: Laurel Lee-Alexander

In April, Chicago welcomed over 330 grants management professionals to the Grants Managers Network’s third annual conference, “At the Crossroads of Philanthropy.”

Organized by the 2007/2008 GMN Program Committee, which was co-chaired by Jordan Faires of The California Endowment, and Andrew McFarland of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the conference featured sessions on best practices, legal and financial compliance and accountability, information technology, and professional development.

Plenary speakers included Joel Fleishman, Professor of Law and Public Policy and Director of the Heyman Center on Ethics, Public Policy and the Professions at Duke University; Pier Rogers, Director of the Axelson Center and Professor of Non-Profit Management at North Park University; and Elaine Waterhouse Wilson, a partner at the law firm of Quarles & Brady, who specializes in tax-exempt organizations.

  • The conference offered members extensive opportunities to learn about and discuss such issues as international grantmaking, trends in philanthropy, and maximizing efficiencies, as well as to network with each other and share ideas with GMN leaders.  There were also sessions on GMN activities, including Project Streamline, the salary survey, and the proposed grants management certification program.
