In April, Chicago welcomed over 330 grants management professionals to the Grants Managers Network’s third annual conference, “At the Crossroads of Philanthropy.”
Organized by the 2007/2008 GMN Program Committee, which was co-chaired by Jordan Faires of The California Endowment, and Andrew McFarland of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the conference featured sessions on best practices, legal and financial compliance and accountability, information technology, and professional development.
Plenary speakers included Joel Fleishman, Professor of Law and Public Policy and Director of the Heyman Center on Ethics, Public Policy and
the Professions at Duke University; Pier Rogers, Director of the Axelson Center and Professor of Non-Profit Management at North Park University; and Elaine Waterhouse Wilson, a partner at the law firm of Quarles & Brady, who specializes in tax-exempt organizations.
- The conference offered members extensive opportunities to learn about and discuss such issues as international grantmaking, trends in philanthropy, and maximizing efficiencies, as well as to network with each other and share ideas with GMN leaders. There were also sessions on GMN activities, including Project Streamline, the salary survey, and the proposed grants management certification program.
At the GMN Annual Meeting on April 8th, the following Board leadership positions were acknowledged and ratified by the Membership:
- Elected to an initial two-year term: Stephanie Duffy (McKnight Foundation, Minneapolis, MN), Chad Gorski (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Chevy Chase, MD), Londell D. Jackson (National Endowment for Financial Education, Greenwood Village, CO), and Bonnie Rivers (Rockefeller Foundation, New York, NY);
- Elected to a second consecutive, two-year term: Karin Bishop (Virginia C. Piper Charitable Trust, Phoenix, AZ), Peg Butler, (Saint Luke’s Foundation, Cleveland, OH), Kent Cozad (The Foundation for AIDS Research, New York, NY), Jordan Faires (California Endowment, Sacramento, CA), and Janice Opalski (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Princeton, NJ); and
- Continuing Board members: Jennifer Burran (Annie E. Casey Foundation, Baltimore, MD), Almeta Corbin (Caring for Colorado Foundation, Denver, CO), Kelly Kleppe (Bush Foundation, St. Paul, MN), Kelly Martin (James Irvine Foundation, San Francisco, CA), Andrew McFarland (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, San Francisco, CA), Adin Miller (Adin Miller Consulting), and Kyle Reis (Ford Foundation, New York, NY).
Retiring Board members Javier Sanchez and Ignacio Estrada were recognized and thanked for their service.

In addition to the programmatic and business matters of the conference, there were some leisure activities that took place. The Midwest Region Chapter, led by Co-Chairs Cheryl Bean, Sunflower Foundation, and Richard Lowell Dunlap, Kresge Foundation, hosted the always popular Dine Arounds. The host committee also organized three other outings, all fully booked before the conference, that included: a handbag making event at 1154 Lil Street Studio; a comedy show at Second City; and a post-conference behind-the-scenes tour of the Field Museum of Natural History followed by a reception at the Spencer Foundation.
