Professional Development
Grants Management Body of Knowledge
Since 1996, the Grants Managers Network (GMN) has connected grants management professionals nationwide to share best practices and improve grantmaking. Our members look to GMN for the knowledge, training, and tools necessary to lead and succeed.
That’s why our ambitious effort to define the grants management profession—the Body of Knowledge (BOK)—is so critical. Developed by and for members, the BOK clarifies the role of grants management in philanthropy. It establishes a common language and framework to gather best practices, resources, and opportunities for shared learning in one place.
GMN Members can use the BOK to conduct self-assessments to determine professional development plans. To learn more about the Body of Knowledge, click here.

Interested in building strong relationships with your local and national peers?
Think about your last performance review or an attractive job posting that floated across your desk. Were there skills you lacked or were less confident about?.jpg)
Volunteering with GMN can help members practice existing skills or even better, gain new ones! Whatever your interest, GMN can help build your resume.
EVERYONE is welcome and encouraged to participate; any GMN member may serve. Your work can be as heavy or light as your schedule permits. Work teams generally meet by phone so no travel is required.
Examples of volunteer opportunities include:
- Monitoring developments in the field, setting standards and best practices, and sharing that knowledge through the GM Guide, newsletter, conference, and other vehicles.
- Managing a regional chapter.
- Designing and delivering sessions for regional meetings and the GMN Annual Conference.
- Building fundraising skills that can help you better understand your grantee’s challenges.
- Developing strategies to help GMN’s members take full advantage of what GMN has to offer them.
