Florida Chapter Launches
GMN has partnered with the Donors Forum of South Florida and the Florida Philanthropic Network to form a new GMN region in Florida. With an initial membership of more than 30 grants managers from private, corporate, and government grantmaking organizations, this region will be meeting both in person and virtually to network, share best practices, and advance the profession.
Welcome GMN Fall Staff Support!
We extend a warm welcome to Karen Perry and Amanda Castroverde who joined GMN at the end of August. Karen will be providing project management support on just about everything going on here at GMN, working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Amanda is charged with updating and expanding GMN’s member database and providing administrative support. She works Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both are students at nearby George Washington University. Advice for Grantees Who Lobby
On February 20, 2009, the IRS issued a Technical Advice Memorandum that offers some insight into the IRS's view on the extent of separation needed between website content of a 501(c)(3) and its affiliated 501(c)(4). Specifically, the IRS determined that a 501(c)(3) public charity impermissibly intervened in a political campaign by including on its website partisan content from its affiliated 501(c)(4) organization. Alliance for Justice is one of the leading sources on advocacy and can provide assistance to nonprofits working in a multitude of areas that need guidance.

What Works Webinars
Starting in October, GMN will offer periodic What Works Webinars where grants management professionals share their solutions to common and emerging grants management problems with their peers. Each webinar with be 45 minutes long and will be free for GMN members. The first webinar, scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 will show how three grants managers have used the GIFTS Customizer module to meet their data tracking needs. Details on the webinar content and how to access it will be shared on the GMN Member Community.
GMN Member Survey Completed
GMN members have spoken—more than 455 of them—in GMN’s 2009 member survey. This breaks all past participation records and will give GMN leadership key feedback on how we’re serving members to date and important direction as we refine our 2010 goals. The results of the survey, and how GMN is responding to it, will be shared with all members in December.
2009 Salary Survey
Many thanks to all members who participated in the 2009 Salary Survey. This data is being analyzed now and will provide the only source of comprehensive information on GMN member salaries, benefits, and job responsibilities. The survey results will be shared with members by November 30. This biennial survey is designed to provide members and their organizations with a current and accurate analysis of compensation and benefits in the grants management profession.
Guide to Streamlining
Project Streamline’s Guide to Streamlining will include principles, tools, resources, and stories to help grantmakers and grantseekers improve their application, monitoring, and reporting practices. The Guide to Streamlining will be a web-based product and will be released in sections beginning in October 2009.
