How do organizations change and grow over time, and what does that mean for grantmaking? Dr. Susan Kenny Stevens, author of the influential Nonprofit Lifecycles: Stage-based Wisdom for Nonprofit Capacity, will explore the seven nonprofit lifecycle stages with a grants management lens, helping you to consider how grantmaking can help or hinder the growth and development of the nonprofits you support. For example, what strengths do nonprofits display as they age? What challenges do they face? How should you assess a start-up organization vs. a mature organization? And, when it comes to grantmaking, does it even matter what stage a nonprofit has reached?

This session will include an in-depth look into the rules for funding advocacy activity. Topics will include general support and project support grants for charities that lobby. Substantial time will be spent on the IRS definition of lobbying so that you can understand when these rules apply. Topics will also include funding non-partisan political activities (e.g., voter registration, candidate debates).

Technology
Core

A key trend in U.S. philanthropy is grantmakers seeking ways to make more informed decisions, strengthen programs, and improve the efficiency of their operations – all with limited resources. Many people believe that this can be accomplished though implementing integrated information systems that facilitate online proposal receipt and review, grant tracking, reporting, knowledge and document management, and social networking. Is this reality or an impossible dream?

Learn how the appropriate and effective use of technology can enable grantmakers to achieve these goals. This presentation will:
• highlight best practices
• discuss common pitfalls and how to avoid them
• present the greatest challenges and how to overcome them
• provide an overview of the major grants management products and services
• discuss the capabilities and limitations of Windows, fully Web, hybrid, and “Cloud”
