Speaker: Rick Cohen, National Correspondent with The Nonprofit Quarterly

In the Pivot:  Foundations Repositioning Themselves in the New Political Economy
What should foundations do to be prepared in this new political and economic environment? Many foundations are excited by the Obama administration’s promised partnerships with institutional philanthropy. Rick Cohen, a national correspondent for the Nonprofit Quarterly and editor of the Cohen Report, will discuss what foundations should do to avoid becoming overly entranced. He will also challenge us to remember some critical functions that should be considered during the economic crisis and current administration, such as countercyclical grantmaking, supporting small grassroots organizations, balancing partnership with government with a necessary skepticism, supporting the networks or infrastructure that undergirds effective nonprofits, and bolstering the capacity of watchdogs to hold both government and business accountable.
