Presenters Christine Soto and Penny McDaniel started off the session with an exercise designed to get seasoned grants managers thinking about their place within an organization and their own personal reaction to change. Attendees walked around and answered three questions, which were posted in different parts of the room:
1. Name one thing you have done to prepare yourself for the "next step" in your career?
2. What is the greatest barrier in your organization to professional development?
3. In your organization, what are the three top leadership qualities that will get your noticed and possibly promoted?
Participants discussed what answers were similar and what concrete actions could they take toward developing leadership qualities. Grants managers then wrote up individual plans that could guide them toward these actions in the next 90 days.
